Hanging chairs for kids' rooms: how to hang them safely

A hanging chair in the kids' room is a reading nook, a retreat and a swing all in one. For it to be fun and hang safely, three things matter: the right model, the right mounting and enough room to swing. Here you'll learn what to look out for.

The key points

  • Load-bearing base: A hanging chair belongs on load-bearing masonry, concrete or a solid wooden beam. Drywall or ceilings in older buildings need suitable mounting hardware from a specialist retailer.
  • Load capacity: Make sure the chair, rope and hook are rated for the weight. The Joki kids' hanging nest holds 80 kg, the CasaMount ceiling hook 160 kg.
  • Room to swing: The chair must be able to swing freely without hitting a wall, furniture or the windowsill.
  • No drilling: If you can't or don't want to put in a hook, choose a stand like the LA SIESTA Arcada.
  • Age: The LA SIESTA kids' models are recommended from 3 years. Only let children swing under supervision.

Which hanging chair suits the kids' room?

LA SIESTA Joki kids' hanging nest

The Joki is a hanging nest for children aged 3 to 10 years, with a load capacity of up to 80 kg. It is 150 cm tall, and the seat is 70 cm wide. Your child sits inside as if in a little tent, reading, daydreaming or swinging. The mounting is included: according to the manufacturer, the MultiSpot is patented and tested by TÜV Rheinland, and the SmartSwivel stops the rope from twisting. Take out the cushion, and the nest can go in the washing machine at 30 °C. Cover made of organic cotton. €169.90.

LA SIESTA Cumbia hanging chair

The Cumbia has no spreader bar. The fabric wraps around you like a hammock, and kids sit inside it as if in a cave. Without a bar, nothing bangs against the wall when it swings. It needs a hanging height of 180 cm and holds up to 130 kg, so it's also something for parents and older siblings. Hand-woven in Colombia from GOTS-certified organic cotton. From €99.90.

LA SIESTA Moki padded kids' hammock

If you have two hanging points, go for the Moki: a padded hammock for children aged 3 to 12 years, with a load capacity of up to 80 kg. You need at least 200 cm between the points and a height of 120 cm. Indoors, it hangs from two CasaMounts; outdoors, from trees. €99.90.

How to hang a hanging chair safely

1. Check the ceiling

Knock on the ceiling or look at the building plans. Concrete and load-bearing masonry are ideal, and so is a solid wooden beam. With drywall or a suspended ceiling, a standard wall plug isn't enough. If in doubt, ask a professional.

2. Use the right hook

The CasaMount is made for hanging chairs and hanging nests with a single hanging point and holds up to 160 kg. It spreads the load over several wall plugs instead of one, and that's the difference from a ceiling hook from the hardware store. Wall plugs and screws for standard masonry are included. You can shorten the 300 cm rope to the right height without drilling again. €24.90.

3. Plan the space

For the Joki, you need a hanging point at a height of at least 200 cm. There must be enough room all around the chair so it can swing freely. Don't place furniture with hard edges within the swing area, and don't hang the chair directly in front of a window. For the Cumbia, LA SIESTA recommends about 30 cm of clearance from the floor.

4. Check regularly

Regularly check that the hook, rope and screw fittings are secure. A rope that frays gets replaced.

No drilling: hanging chair with a stand

In rented apartments, or with ceilings that can't take the load, a stand is the solution. The LA SIESTA Arcada made of galvanized steel holds up to 160 kg and works with hanging chairs of all sizes and with the Joki (except Joki Air). A removable safety net stretches around the swing area, and the wide base keeps it from tipping over. You need a floor space of 155 × 151 cm and a room height of 221 cm. At 26.9 kg, you can move it around the room, but not all the time. €259.90.

You'll find all models under Hammocks & hanging chairs and at LA SIESTA.
